Fort Macon State Park interprets and preserves the history of Fort Macon, completed in 1834 to guard North Carolina's only deepwater ocean port. Following the Spanish-American War, the fort was abandoned but was restored and established as North Carolina's first state park in 1936. Visitors are able to explore the fort’s rooms depicting different eras of soldier occupation, as well as fish, picnic, swim, and hike nature trails. Fort Macon State Park is located just east of Morehead City, on the eastern end of Bogue Banks.
